Matara Tourist Information
Matara Batik Workshop
Vivant city in the deep South of Sri Lanka. Capital of the district of Matara.
Matara owes nothing to tourism, therefore it is a nice place to watch
Sri Lankan citylife and to meet with the locals.
you can practise your handtalking skills or buy a phrasebook, most people
dont speak English. But dont let that withhold you,
the least you get is a smile :)
Like everywhere in Sri Lanka the people are very friendly and helpfull.
There are several traces of Dutch VOC times to be found in the city.
Most importantly the Starfort. This little fort harbours a museum,
where you can see, amongst other interesting artifacts:
This is how i discovered that apparently the taste of Dutch people
hasn't changed much in hunderds of years.
In the Starfort you can also see evidence of the visits the famous
Chinese explorer Zheng He made to Ceylon in the 15th century.
Entrance is a donation according to your own taste and size in wallet:)
Around the starfort is swimming: one crocodile and several turtles.
Trouble catching a crocodile on camera?
this crocodile has nowhere to go ...
